Named after Queen Elizabeth I and modelled on the 1906 HMS Dreadnought, HMS Queen Elizabeth was the first of the class of Queen Elizabeth battleships which became known as ‘Super Dreadnoughts’. When she was launched in 1913, Queen Elizabeth was one of the most powerful ships of her era, with the five ships in her class designed to operate against lead ships in an enemy fleet. Her service with the Royal Navy spanned both World Wars before her role became redundant and she was scrapped in 1948.
