TRAVEL FLY-WEIGHT

Of course, being an angler adds a complicating element to deciding where to take that family holiday because (much to my wife’s resigned frustration) I never, ever, go anywhere without my carefully chosen fishing gear. My family holiday venues are always diligently researched and selected to be able to present me with the chance to at least wet a line or two, while obviously fulfilling all the other essential family getaway requirements too.

Once upon a time that presented me with a number of compromises. Much as I was perfectly happy to travel with just minimal underwear and a toothbrush in order to accommodate beach casters and the accompanying paraphernalia in my luggage allowance, sadly the needs of the family wouldn’t allow this. That left two options: find charter boats close to my destination at home or abroad that could offer all the tackle I’d need (and indeed that’s something I have done many times) or find ways to scale down my gear to an acceptable enough level to take with me. As my preferred methods of sea angling began to evolve, so to a degree did my holiday packing choices.
