The personality make-up of a racing driver comes with a healthy dose of self-confidence. In some competitors that slice can be quite large, too, which leads many to think of it as arrogance. But it is merely a byproduct of the self-belief needed to scale a difficult sport.
What is also notable about even the most successful drivers is that they tend not to rely on training or coaching. When a driver reaches what he or she decides is a high enough level within the sport, the training sessions are rapidly consigned to history. Other sports such as tennis, boxing or golf – again sports where the individual is in the spotlight in terms of personal performance – use coaches right up to World championship level, whereas motorsport very rarely does.
