FOR many fanciers, 2024 has delivered a slow start. Our increasingly unpredictable weather patterns are causing havoc. Providing an artificial environment is one thing, but nature still has a way of telling our birds that all is not well. Fanciers of all varieties have suffered as a result, with clear eggs, dead-in-shell, late hatchings and hens walking off their eggs. It is usually the second round that sorts this out, so there remains hope for those who have made a bad start.

My own results have been as per usual. I have chicks weaned and others in the nest, with plenty more still to hatch. I've learned over the years that canary breeders are rarely happy with their results, always knowing there is roominto what we hope will become champions of their day.
