When a change of parent is best

BENGALESE

BENGALESE finches are known to be excellent foster parents and have been widely used for rearing various foreign finches. Gouldians are a prime example, and although Gouldian parent-rearing has improved significantly, Bengalese are often kept on standby. Interestingly, Gouldians can have issues with air-sac mite, something that very rarely effects Bengalese, and so using Bengalese can help to break the air-sac mite's life cycle.

Bengalese were used in the Edwards birdroom for many years to foster Heck's grassfinches, but the use of fostering these days is only between Bengalese pairs. I don't normally use pairs as feeders for
