IT HAD been weeks since we’d last seen the Princess of Wales – and the last time we did was hardly an occasion to celebrate.

Kate, sitting alone on a bench in Windsor, calmly told the world she had cancer and asked for privacy as she battled the disease away from the public eye.

We wouldn’t see her for months – and there was even speculation we might not see her again at all this year. So when the Instagram post landed on the Friday night before King Charles’ birthday celebration, a sense of relief poured over me. Kate, looking like Kate with her flowing dark tresses and posing under a large tree, was okay.

One part of her message was particularly encouraging. “I look forward to attending the king’s birthday parade this weekend with my family,” she said.

She was at pains to say she wasn’t out of the woods yet but she was well enough to attend Trooping
