Holding my glass under the tap in the kitchen sink, I filled it up with water.

Popping two painkillers in my mouth, I took a gulp and knocked them back.

I’d been having horrible migraines for a few days – I’d tried everything I could get over the counter, but nothing seemed to shift them.

Back in November 2023, I was working as a care assistant in a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, and had been put down for a shift over the Thanksgiving holiday.

With my family five hours away in Illinois, I didn’t mind.
