Chipper Chase’s 1958 Chevrolet pickup spent three decades being useful without suffering the slightest amount of damage or wear.

“I parked it in my father’s garage and I left it there,” Chase recalled. “I bought another car and it sat there for 30 years. It sat in the garage; we had a swimming pool, and we had put our pool supplies in the back of it.”

Even for an Apache 3100 half-ton, that was a light-duty assignment.

The truck and car connection

By the time Chase’s truck was built, pickups from most manufacturers were becoming at least somewhat civilized. It’s not easy to pin down the point at which that trend began, as many early pickups were nothing more than coupes or roadsters with cargo boxes instead of trunks, making them just about as civilized as the passenger cars upon which they were based.
