On the hunt
We stayed in touch through the following years, and Eldre would occasionally stay in our home in Edmonton on his annual marketing trip. It wasn’t until 2017, however, that we again hunted together. That year I accompanied my long-time hunting partner, Rollie, and a neighboring rancher of our hunting camp, on their first African safari, and I’d naturally set them up with Eldre. It was a wonderful experience to watch newbies to Africa absorb the incredible wildlife, people and hospitality they encountered. While Rollie did most of the hunting, I did take time to shoot a mountain reed buck, a Cape bushbuck and a blue duiker. Hunting those tiny duiker in dense forest as they ran ahead of the dogs was an experience I won’t soon forget. The best advice I can give to someone wanting to hunt them that way is to practice with your shotgun on hard-crossing diving ducks; that’s about all the time you’ll have, and that’s about how fast your target
