It could be Alexander % Philip’s eldest brother who was king of Macedon 370-368. Anaximenes includes the details in the naming of the cavalry as the Companions and of using those of highest honour to fill its ranks, and naming the Foot Companions (). He also talks of the division of the infantry into companies and files and other commands. The earliest known naming of the pezhetairoi is in a speech by Demosthenes (Second Olynthiac 17). Anaximenes accompanied Alexander the Great on his campaigns and wrote a , but it reads like he is, in fact, crediting the reforms to ‘his’ Alexander and the man who was his patron. This is a false trail, however, and the reforms of Philip were in place for Alexander to take over before he became king; there is no good reason to reject that it was Philip who reformed the Macedonian military system.
