SKELETON COAST AND HENTIES BAY

1 St Nowhere Spa and Campsite

A popular fishing spot 110 km north of Henties Bay. Camping from R525 p.n. for five people. Sea view camping from R600 p.n. for five people. Private stands with own bathroom and a wind shelter R750 for five people. All camping stands have a power point. Communal ablutions with hot showers and flush toilets. Self-catering bungalow from R1 100 p.n. for the first four people and R275 per extra person (sleeps 5 – 9). Groups of up to 13 can book the big house – from R2200 p.n. for eight people plus R275 per extra person. These are the rates if you stay for two nights. Rate excludes 2% tourism levy and bedding; available at an extra cost – request when booking. The kiosk sells basic supplies. It's not a traditional spa but you can soak in salt water.

2 Mile 108 Campsite (NWR)

About 90 km north of Henties Bay. Campsite with a long drop and no electricity R170 p.p. (max eight). You pay for water: R1,25 per litre; R10 per shower. Self-contained campsite (own shower and toilet, no nearby braai) R280 p.p. (max eight). Campsite with private ablutions and a donkey boiler, braai, stoep with solar lights and basin R660 p.n. for four people, plus R75 per extra person (max eight). Basic fisherman's cabin R440 p.n. (sleeps two).

Open year-round; gets crowded in December and January. The kiosk sells ice, beer, bait and firewood.

3 Cape Cross Seal Reserve

About 1 km north of the seal colony – there are five platforms with shelter against the wind. It's very basic – bring your own drinking and washing water. No power. Camping R100 p.p. Entrance fee to the reserve R100 p.p. (SADC rate), plus R50 per vehicle.

4 Cape Cross Lodge

This lodge is next to the Cape Cross Seal Reserve, about 60 km north of Henties Bay. The campsite has 21 sheltered stands (R200 p.p.) with power points, a scullery and a braai. Maximum six people per stand. Whalers self-catering cottage (sleeps four) from R750 p.n. Double room from R2 373 p.p. sharing DB&B (SADC rate R1 584). There's also a restaurant, bar, gift shop and a small museum.

5 Mile 72 Campsite (NWR)

This campsite is 36 km north of Henties Bay. Camping R170 p.p. (max eight per stand). Campsite has a long drop, no electricity and you have to buy water: R1,25 per litre; R10 per shower. Basic fisherman cabin R440 p.n. (sleeps two). Only open in December and January.

6 De Duine Hotel

Next to the sea in Duine Street. Double room R763 p.n. Family room from R1 374 p.n. (sleeps four). They have braai and conference facilities, a restaurant and a bar. There's a swimming pool and a squash court.

7 letsiemeer Beach House

This luxurious self-catering guesthouse has a view of the sea. You rent the house exclusively and there is space for 28 people in 12 rooms. Rent three seafront en suite double rooms for R6 100 p.n. (six people sharing). Three extra seafront double rooms from R1 455 p.n. each. Four courtyard double rooms cost R1 275 p.n. Two family rooms R1 850 p.n. (sleep four each). 8 Buck's Camping Lodge

In Henties, 10 minutes from the sea. The campsite has 45 stands and it's a great place to pitch a tent. Each stand has electricity and a private bathroom. There's a wall to protect you from the wind. Camping R350 p.n. (Dec/Jan R400) for up to four people, plus R50 per extra person (max six people per stand).

SPITZKOPPE

11 Spitzkoppe Campsites

The campsite has 31 stands among the boulders, set far apart from each other. Each stand has its own long drop. There are communal showers with hot water and flush toilets at the reception office. There's also a bar and a restaurant. Braai packs are available. Camping R220 p.p. Day visitors R180 p.p. A guided outing to rock art sites in Bushman's Paradise is included in the price and takes about two hours.

12 Spitzkoppe Tented Camp

The camp is only a kilometre from Spitzkoppe. Four private campsites (R210 p.p.) each with a bathroom, braai and power. There are also 14 en suite safari tents that sleep two or four people: R1 000 p.p. Four bush wagons withor sip a beer at the Bush Bar. The bar has Wi-Fi and you can order food.
