The newest installment in the storied career of travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux is a historical semi-biographical novel following the development of British writer George Or-well from a colonial police officer named Eric Blair to a firebrand who stands against Britain’s pursuit of empire. Throughout the novel, Theroux explores the deep-seated racism and paternalism shown toward the conquered Burmese. In the midst of it all, main character Blair struggles against his daily responsibilities and a violent history as an Eton man who’s been practically trained to bedevil his social inferiors. Anson demonstrates a great command of British dialect, especially that of Blair, an upwardly mobile middle-class young man with colonial aspirations. Anson’s reading of South Asian characters is slightly accented but restrained. Recommended for readers of historical and literary fiction, but Burma Sahib could contain cross-genre appeal to readers of narrative nonfiction and biography. —Andrew Cook
