What does a literary agent do?

A literary agent is an author’s manager and represents the rights to their work. We get them the best deals, help shape their manuscripts and monitor publicity. We are typically the first people to read their work, apart from possibly family and friends. We talent-spot, look at trends, option rights for film and TV, and sell translation rights. It’s very hands-on.
