From the time she was a little girl Cato Pedder was obsessed with South Africa. Raised in England, she made frequent trips here and as the great-grandchild of former prime minister Jan Smuts, she felt proud to land in Joburg at an airport bearing her famous relative’s name.

As she grew older and discovered the role her great-grandfather had played in the formation of apartheid, her sense of pride diminished.
