YOU don’t need his cellphone number or address to track him down – you can find him in a flash by walking onto the beach in Muizenberg and asking anyone with a surfboard under their arm, “Where can I find Paul Sampson?”

Today a grey-haired surfer is happy to oblige. “His adopted family owns the Surfshack – it’s over there near the railway crossing.”

Having surfed here since he was a little boy, Paul (24) is one of the most well-known people in the seaside community near Cape Town – and his new status as Africa’s joint number one-ranked surfer has this bohemian enclave abuzz.
