“This is a timestamp in the evolution of Nightmares On Wax. Fans will know, I first sampled the Quincy Jones track Summer In The City on Nights Interlude from my debut album, A Word of Science. And in those days, we didn’t clear samples – guerrilla tactics.
“Then, when the second album, Smokers Delight, came along, it [allowed me to] start working with a keyboard player called Robin Taylor-Firth, bass guitarist Hamlet Luton and Chris Dawkins on the guitar.
“Through the success of Smokers Delight, Rob Mitchell, co-founder of Warp, said, ‘It’d be amazing if you could do an orchestrated version of that track, with strings’. And, I was like, ‘I’d love to! It’d be my dream’.
“So, we went to Angel Studios in London, and used a collective called the Pure Strings for this version. It was a 26-piece orchestra, but we recorded it twice, so it ended up being a 52-piece.”
