Techniques Sowing & planting

Start in seedtrays and pots

To grow strongly, most seedlings need good light, so it’s best to sow seeds into trays or pots and place in a bright spot, rather than sowing straight into their final position, especially if that will be in dense shade. By giving your seedlings the chance to develop a strong root system before planting into shade, you’ll have a higher chance of success.

To start fine seeds off, fill a small tray with seed compost, firm gently, then scatter the seeds, such as foxgloves, thinly over the surface.
