Combatting Sepsis, the Biggest Killer in Intensive Care Units

Vulnerable populations, especially in low-income and developing countries are disproportionately affected by this devastating disease. Due to an ageing population and an increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance, the annual incidence of sepsis, and sepsis-related deaths, continues to rise. Development of new effective treatments is a global healthcare priority.

Sodium ascorbate, a pH-balanced formulation of vitamin C validated and patented by The Florey, offers hope as a novel therapy for sepsis, the first in several decades. Sepsis is characterised by life-threatening low blood pressure (hypotension) and reduced responsiveness to ordinarily potent drugs that maintain normal blood pressure (vasopressors).

This results in reduced delivery of blood supply to multiple vital organs including the brain, lungs, and kidneys. Disrupted blood flow to the extremities can be so severe that tissues of the hands and feet can die, necessitating amputation. Survivors of sepsis are often faced with persisting healthcare problems, resulting in a substantial socioeconomic burden on national and international healthcare systems.
