Reviews for Miss Ruffles Inherits Everything
5 ratings4 reviews
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was an enjoyable tale. I liked the character development and the canine fur persons. If you have an afternoon to kick back and disconnect from the world I recommend this title be your next choice.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Nancy Martin never fails to entertain her readers and she doesn't disappoint us with her newest cozy, "Miss Ruffles Inherits Everything". This is set in Mule Stop, Texas a dry dusty, college town that doesn't have a lot going on other than College football and the Jr. Rodeo. That is until Honeybelle Hensley the wealthiest widow in town meets her untimely demise. When her will is read, it causes quite a stir. It seems that Honeybelle left her millions to her rambunctious Cattle Cur, Miss Ruffles which has terrorized half the town. Miss Ruffles, is left in Honeybelle's social secretary aka glorified dog walker, Sunny's charge. Sunny is a misplaced Yankee, who would like nothing better than to move out of Mule Stop as fast as she can. She's in a bind herself with Miss Ruffles safety and care in her charge and trying to find out who killed Honeybelle. The list just gets longer by the minute. This is a great little mystery and I would love to see what else Ms. Martin has planned for Ms. Ruffles in Mule Stop, Texas.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this as much as I did because I really love Nancy Martin's writing, her Blackbird Sisters series was one of my all-time favorites. Unfortunately, it ended after the last book and even though the title of this one had me raising my eyebrows, I thought, why not? Story wise... meh. It didn't quite work, mostly because the twist at the end felt like an afterthought, bringing the whole story to an unrealistic conclusion. The romance aspect didn't quite work either - the chemistry was there, but the manufactured obstacle's resolution lacked emotional sincerity; I was left wondering why it even existed at all. But I did love the setting, the characters and the writing, which made it easy to lose myself for a couple of hours, so no regrets. Mostly, this book felt like an accomplished writer experimenting; stretching her boundaries. Not up to snuff, but not a waste of time, either.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Honeybelle Hensley of Mule Stop, Texas, dies and leaves everything to her dog, Miss Ruffles, who has a well-deserved reputation for being unruly. When her will is read, everyone in Honeybelle’s family is shocked, to say the least. Sunny McKillip, Honeybelle’s personal assistant and Miss Ruffles’ dogsitter, is the most surprised of all.If Sunny can keep Miss Ruffles safe and healthy for one year, Sunny will receive a $1 million and will be able to get on with her life. So will Honeybelle’s cook and butler. The terms of the will are overseen by “Ten” Tennyson, an almost-lawyer whose family law firm has been taking care of the Hensley family for decades. He warns Sunny that he will be keeping a personal eye on her for any malfeasance. Sunny, you see, is a Yankee, and fairly newly arrived in Mule Stop and, therefore, not trusted.Miss Ruffles Inherits Everything is played for laughs … and it, indeed, is lighthearted and fun to read. Having been an outsider in Texas, I sympathize with Sunny. She has to cope with Miss Ruffles antics PLUS learn how to live with the gun-toting, big-haired women AND the cowboy culture. Then there are the goons who sit outside Honeybelle’s house waiting for Sunny to fork over money her mother supposedly owes to a Mr. Big. Miss Ruffles Inherits Everything is a sweet and endearing light mystery with a great heroine and a wild cast of secondary characters.
