What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. Some enjoy the series and appreciate the unpredictable plot and well-developed characters. They love the twists and turns and the moral compass of the author's writing. However, there are negative reviews as well. Some readers find the story infantile and the narrator's voice unpleasant. Others dislike the dark and gruesome ending, the killing off of beloved characters, and the feeling that the bad guys win. Overall, the series is recommended by fans, but there are some aspects that may not appeal to everyone.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The series was great but the final ending was horrible.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Kat and Mouse books have been amazing. So gripping and with comedy. I was sooo sad though that Hannah was killed off. I was in tears!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Just finished all five audio books in the series back to back. Great writing, lots of twists and well rounded main characters that you care about. I will be checking out other books by the same author
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Sorry to see the end of Kat, Mouse, Doris, Luke Martha and all the others. Thoroughly enjoyed my book "family".
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I miss Kat and Mouse already ? hope the spin off keeps the family going
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I liked the main characters. Though I think Mouse and Doris are a little too strong and talented. I think the motivation of the "bad guys" was questionable and not fully conclusive though..
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was stunning. The best of the series, and the most incredible twist is left for the last few sentences. (DON'T cheat.) I did guess some of the culprits early, but things are so tangled up in this one ... there were still tons of surprises. A worthy conclusion, though I do hope (along with other reviewers) that there are more Kat & Mouse books to come. Still, if this has to be the conclusions ... it worked well. I will miss these dear friends!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great story, but the narrator is awful sounds like a child’s story book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5LOVED these books. i am 81 years old and have been reading mystery stories for over 60 years. I hope you change your mind and write more of the Kat & Mouse Mysteries. Marcia P.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great book! I love How she continues her books and characters. I love Doris! You have a great storyline with believable and interesting characters. You have little twists and turns to maintain interest. I enjoyed this book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this series of books! How did the author think of all these twists and turns? There is one problem. I have reached the end. Could you please change that?
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5As always enjoyed this series. First time the solution wasn’t predictable. Some was but not the final crime. What was predictable as it was being set up was the death of a beloved character. Totally unnecessary and set up with the usual bright future ahead everyone in love but no we have to kill that. I haven’t read the entire series so look forward to it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A really good ending for a series that I've enjoyed a lot.
I can't say this one has been my favorite because I would be giving too much away, but it definitely is darker than the others. I've liked it very much all the same.
These books can be read as standalones, but I recommend doing it in order so you follow how the relationship between these women starts and develops.
I will miss these wonderful women and their adventures.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Infantile story and reader to match. Such a pity you have no way of checking this before investing the time
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I truly enjoyed the entire series, until this story. My assumption in killing off an important and loved secondary character is to set up a new series but it just felt wrong to me. The other item that hurt the story for me is that the bad guy(s) seemingly win in the end.
Maybe it is just me but I was a bit let down. In the acknowledgement, the author mentioned that she wrote it during the Covid lock down... maybe she was in a dark place. I will read future stories as her writing style typically builds on strong relationships.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Weird (as in who would think) and wonderful storyline. I had to slow the audio to .8 to make it normal speed as the 1.0 was so fast, quite fun. Anita Waller is a great writer. The narrator is spot on. What I enjoy most from the author is how she gives her character ethic and a moral compass of decency.
The characters of the agency Connect too work in tandem with the police. Anita does not compromise her storytelling with cheap arguments and secrecy, or lone ranger antics often found in books by other mystery writers.
Anita's writing achieves cohesiveness through exceptional writing. Love the series.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Way to dark for me. The methods the murderer used were bad enough to listen to once, but to have them repeated? I heard it the first time I don’t need it repeated. And I do not like getting hooked on a series and then having a main character killed off for no good reason. Nope, couldn’t even finish the book. I gave it 2 stars because I am sure some people are way more hard core than myself and will enjoy this latest book. But I am just not in that group of people.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow! I stumbled upon this series and author, and I am so fortunate to have done so! This village and its inhabitants are so happy man, fallible, and loving! The stories are well-developed, filled with solid clues and well-conceived red herrings that make the mysteries fun to try to solve. Having a variety of ages in characters is such a plus for this set of tales. I highly recommend the four Cat and Mouse mysteries!
