The narrator was good but miscast. Her rep of Slade had him sounding elderly and the rep of Annie had her sounding like a very small child. This book hasn't aged well. Published in 1999 and the dated language and story reflects it. There are truly cringey moments all throughout the story. The young child feels like a pawn for the male and female main characters. The "hero" of the story doesn't come across as sympathetic at all, he reads like a terrible father and his chemistry with Val and his stringing her back and forth feels more manipulative than truly tension or conflict filled. Val and some of the supporting characters also use manipulation to "guilt" Slade. There is a definite "formula" to the story and the characters literally spell out what it is. One scene involving a married character nearly caused me to DNF the whole thing.
