What our readers think
Readers find this title to have a fair amount of repetition and slow pacing, but they appreciate the well-written and narrated characters. Some find the setup unrealistic, but others enjoy the refreshing murder mystery and the depiction of post-war England. Overall, readers look forward to the next book in the series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved the relationship between the two female characters. Pragmatic yet affectionate. The depiction of post-war England was very touching.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great start, interesting characters and complex enough not to have an obvious culprit. Looking forward to next book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5So refreshing to read a good murder mystery, as I had finished all of Agatha Christie’s. I look forward to reading more in this series!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Not for me. I found the whole setup totally unrealistic, even for a cozy, and the pacing very slow.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was very slow with a fair amount of repetition. Whilst I didn’t expect a lot of action, and it did amble along quite nicely, I ended up skipping to almost the end about half way through listening . I will however continue to the next in series as I loved the characters and it’s very well written and narrated.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Times are difficult for Edwina Davenport, and she is forced to advertise for a lodger. Her old friend, the adventurous Beryl Helliwell, sees the ad, coming to her friend's rescue and attempting to alleviate some of the village gossip about her friend's circumstances by implying she works as a spy. The two end up becoming a pair of detectives when the local constable refuses to see a murder as a murder. It suffers some of the typical problems of first installments, but it is an enjoyable read in an English village setting which is always a win! I listened to the audiobook read by Barbara Rosenblat.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/51920 and in the village of Walmsley Parva Edwina Davenport gets more than she bargained for when old friends Beryl Helliwell replies to her advertisement for a lodger. Trying to help out her friend Beryl insinuates that they are detectives looking into the secrets of the village, not helped by the total ineptitude of the local untrained constable.
An unlikely pair, but a delightful pair, a well-written easy to read mystery and look forward to reading the next in the series
A NetGalley Book - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A good mystery but not very exciting
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Beryl has come to live with her old school friend Edwina after seeing an advertisement for a lodger. Ed has fallen on hard times and when Beryl arrives in the small village of Walmsley Parva she discovers that Ed has become the center of gossip because of her poor financial situation. Beryl makes up a story for the town gossip about them being secret agents during the war and still working undercover for the King. That night Ed is attacked while taking her dog out for a walk. The “Odd Couple” friends think that it had to do with Edwina’s time working for the Land Army during the war and a missing girl during that time. Another young woman is found dead and the fiends won’t stop investigating they solve it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A little TOO cosy for my taste, with too many unlikely coincidences.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Funny and lovely mystery. A very enjoyable duo of senior sleuths, the flamboyant Beryl and the sensible and mousy Edwina investigates together.
The duo is absolutely fantastic as well as the cast of characters. The historical setting, England post WWI, is well researched and the cast of characters is well developed. The book is really well written.
The book is very likable and I look forward to read the next instalment.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to review this book.
