About this audiobook

Police Chief Autumn Long is fighting to keep her job in the quiet Alaska town of Shadow Gap when an unexpected string of criminal activity leaves her with a wounded officer, unexplained murders, and an attack on her own father. Despite
her mistrust of outsiders, she turns to Grier Brenner, a newcomer who seems to have the skills and training Autumn needs to face this threat to her community.

Grier is in Alaska for the same reason many others are—to disappear—when Chief Long enlists his help. He emerges from the shadows and proves his mettle, but his presence in her life could be a deadly trap for them both. If his secret is exposed,
all will be lost. And he’s not sure even Autumn could save him.

I love Elizabeth Goddard books. Great adventure and mystery with characters you find yourself rooting for. She writes with characters who are Christian and rely on God but I think that you don't have to be a Christian to enjoy reading her books. Being a Christian is a part of who some of the characters are and the 'bad guys' aren't labeled any which way- at least in this one. This one had a great mix of Alaska bush flying, deep sea diving and general hardships of living in remote Alaska. I've lived outside of Anchorage, which isn't the same at all, but it all felt true to what I've experienced in my travels around the state.

Wow! What a fantastic beginning to a new series. The beauty of this town nestled along a bay in southeast Alaska is well documented giving the reader just a small sense of the grandeur as well as the remoteness. For Autumn, being police chief of Shadow Gap is not only the family business, but what she feels God has called her to be. With her abilities being questioned and danger invading her quiet village as well as the surrounding area, she begins to doubt herself. Can she do the job?Grier, an unknown, has arrived on the scene and seems to be ready to help in whatever way he can. But should she trust him? What is he running from? The mystery just increases, bringing more questions than answers. This early copy was received through Baker Publishing Group, Revell and NetGalley. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

I enjoyed this book from start to finish, although as I will explain later, more at the start than at the finish. The author seized my attention immediately, with a murder, an avalanche and a rescue of a woman nearly drowned in the cold waters of a fjord. It is Alaska, where we are told that many people come to start a new life, and some to hide from their old life. It turns out that the hero (Grier) who saved the woman is a person who came to Alaska to hide. The police chief of the small town where the action takes place (Autumn) is a thirty year old daughter of the former chief, having taken over his position after he suffered an accident. She witnessed the rescue from a seaplane, not the first time she had been impressed by this stranger who had showed up in town just a few months before. They get involved in several adventures where she realizes that he has special skills he must have learned in law enforcement or the military. But Grier keeps mum about his past, knowing that he is in great danger and not wanting to get Autumn involved. Autumn has secrets and trauma in her past, and the two, who are clearly attracted to each other, cannot communicate their feelings. However, it turns out that they are both are in danger, for weirdly connected reasons, and eventually must work together for not only their own safety but that of others. There are a series of murders, attempted murders, bad guys killed, more bad guys showing up, discovery of bodily remains, abductions, torture – you get the picture. Autumn knows Grier is hiding secrets, even though her instincts tell her he is a good guy. Can she trust her instincts? And Grier, though totally enraptured by Autumn, dares not tell her what she desperately wants to know. Will he ever be able to convince her of his innocence? There are many plot twists and surprises along the way, culminating in a rousing finish. So why did I not enjoy the ending as much as the beginning? There were just too many “Perils of Pauline” rescues. (Reader, are you too young to know about Perils of Pauline? Google it!) Time after time, the good guys are in desperate peril, yet they always (or almost always) get out of it. Sure, I know one has to suspend disbelief when reading a thriller, but I finally found myself thinking “this is getting to be too much.” And at the very end, an old phrase from the 1980s came to mind – “jumped the shark”. But nevertheless, I did enjoy the book and would recommend it to lovers of mysteries and suspense novels. And kudos to the author for having written a novel without having to use profanity in every bit of dialogue. What a “novel” idea!

A mystery about how people go missing in Alaska sounded great, but this book was more about the romance between the sheriff and her partner and her alcoholic father than detective work. No real clues until halfway through. The best feature was the description of everyday life in Alaska.

Peaceful remote Shadow Gap, Alaska, a beautiful setting for Elizabeth Goddard's new book, and if your familiar with her writing, yes, your in for an adventure of non-stop action, and this one does not disappoint.I love that there is some sweet romance, but there is also some town drama, but then there is the body count. Autumn Long is the Chief of Police and this quiet town is about to become very busy! Enter mysterious Grier Brenner, and now there is more danger most you won't see coming!Keep reading, there are lots of surprises coming, and you will wonder whom is going to survive. Now I can't wait for the next book in this series!I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Revell, and was not required to give a positive review.
