About this audiobook

A former slave fighting for justice. A reclusive warrior who no longer believes it exists. And a dark magic that will entangle their fates.

Ripped from a forgotten homeland as a child, Tisaanah learned how to survive with nothing but a sharp wit and a touch of magic. But the night she tries to buy her freedom, she barely escapes with her life.

Desperate to save the best friend she left behind, Tisaanah journeys to the Orders, the most powerful organizations of magic Wielders in the world. But to join their ranks, she must complete an apprenticeship with Maxantarius Farlione, a handsome and reclusive fire wielder who despises the Orders.

The Orders's intentions are cryptic, and Tisaanah must prove herself under the threat of looming war. But even more dangerous are her growing feelings for Maxantarius. The bloody past he wants to forget may be the key to her future . . . or the downfall of them both.

But Tisaanah will stop at nothing to save those she abandoned. Even if it means gambling in the Orders's deadly games. Even if it means sacrificing her heart.

Even if it means wielding death itself.

Contains mature themes.

The book is way more than I expected honestly. It was fantastic and engaging. A great balance between world building and dialogue. It takes a couple chapters to get into it but once the “big event” happens, it’s a genuinely enjoyable and entertaining story.
    HOWEVER
I literally had to buy the book once the male narration began halfway through. I mean it was incredibly terrible to the point that I literally laughed out loud listening to it for the first time. I bought the book only so I could turn off the audiobook and read the male narrated chapters, it was TRULY that bad.

I was not was engaged with characters. There was a lot of hype about this book. It didn’t live up to the hype. I will try the second book to see if it get better.

Great story! The female narrator was amazing! I didn't love the way the male narrator read, and found it distracting.

Super mid read, might've been a bit better but the male POV narrator is so out of breath I'm like what, dude chill for a sec before you keep reading

I really genuinely enjoyed this book. It can be really heavy at times so be aware this is not a cozy read or anything. The characters were well fleshed out, the relationships between them convoluted and interesting. It's been a long time since I've read something that actually had characters and relationships that felt real and genuine. I also love that each character has their strengths and their fair share of weaknesses. The worlds are rich, but could do with some more details. I can't wait to start listening to the next book.

Quick note: The female narrator is incredible -- great, varied voices, she hits all of the intense emotional beats with absolute honesty. I've previously had issues with narrators being overly dramatic, but this is not the case here, she is 100/10.
However, I'm not gonna lie. The male narrator is...well he's not great. He is not the worst I've heard, but the first couple chapters he does are pretty painful to listen to, but I think I either got used to it or he got a little better. UNTIL a big battle scene in which you hear every breath this man takes and it is SO distracting. Still enjoyed the book, but I was real close to buying the physical copy just to read his sections. You can power through, but beware. Don't not listen because of him though, he doesn't really have that many chapters and the story and female narrator make it worth it!

Good - kinda slow at the beginning but picked up

*Did they switch out the male narrator? I came back for a re-listen, and I'd don't remember the guys sounding so off? Weirdly fast and breathy. Also takes an enormous amount of deep breaths between sentences?
I find I'm feeling the opposite of most of the reviewers here. I didn't mind the male narrator, but I could not stand the female narration. It was truly the worst I've heard. I'm not going to go into all the reasons why, because that's not important.
I ended up not finishing the audio because of her and instead read the book. Which is where my rating came from. I recommend reading it.

Uhg. I may not even be able to finish this audio because of how bad the male narrator is. Such weird cadence, weird wispery tone, non-sensical inflections, whiny voice. The male narrator is so bad. Disappointing as I am invested in the story - although its been a slow start. However, he is the male narrator for the entire series and as soon as he started I just cringed the entire time. :(

Really slow beginning but when it does pick up it’s really good. But I understand the pace because character developments were necessary.

Great book, narration wasn’t that amazing. The actress is fine and the actor needs to work on not making this sound like a business book.

This book was far better than I anticipated! Not sure what everyone's problem with the male narrator is, I didn't find him annoying or anything - maybe just a bit emotionless. This book kept me interested, not a ton of spice to it but it keeps you enthralled

Story is amazing. Once this is finished I will be reading the rest of the series. I literally cannot stand the male narrator. Maybe it's just me but the deep breaths he takes puts me on edge. Worse than nails on a chalkboard. It's unbearable.

I'll admit that I initially Dnf'd this because I couldn't get into it. The first ten chapters can drag a bit, HOWEVER... Once she meets Max I was into it. Definitely gives me some Throne of Glass vibes and is a classic romantasy story with a badass FMC.

Our FMC comes from a land where she was ripped away from her family at a young age and sold into slavery. She manages to escape once she is 21 and sails across the sea, basically on the verge of death. When she arrives she seeks out a magical organization with the power to help her free her friends from slavery. However, their help comes at a cost and she is told that she must be accepted into the organization and prove her magical usefulness. She is sent to the last remaining member who is capable of training her. He is ornery, unwilling and altogether unpleasant. And though it takes time she finally wins him to her side and he trains her. This is only the first 1/2 of the story and much more unravels as our FMC gains control over her magic and court intrigue, betrayals and secrets are unveiled.

    Things to expect
✅ Badass FMC who is determined and skilled
    ✅ Banter and playful flirting
    ✅ Friendship to lovers
✅ Development of feelings over 6+ months
✅ Themes of trauma and resilience
✅ Open door spice but on the mild side

On the audio side... The gal who voices the FMC is awesome. The guy though, sheesh it's like hes running a marathon and has to gasp after every breath. Idk what his deal is but everytime he talked he rushed through the sentences and sucked in air in the weirdest moments! It became really distracting ??

    Overall
    Story ⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Spice ?️
Audio ? *gasp* ? *gasp* ? *gasp* (sarcasm - 3/5 because she was awesome and mainly narrates like 67% of the book)

DNF at the first chapter. Female narrator is terrible. Can hear her inhale and static. Maybe I’ll try again later.
