About this audiobook

Jill and Carrie-both married with teenage children-meet one day during Jill's lunch break at a local park. Soon a friendship is forged. A friendship that deepens with each visit.

Jill's husband still lives and breathes the coach's life, a life that leaves him little time to spare for Jill. Left on her own more and more, Jill finds herself searching for the indefinable something that has been missing all her life.

Married to a successful businessman, Carrie Howell retired early from a career in real estate to spend more time with her teenage boys, and to pursue her lone passion-painting. She, too, has felt for some time that something is missing from her world.

The Cottage is the story of two women pulled by a force stronger than their marriages, stronger than themselves. The story of Jill and Carrie. Two women. One love.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a moving and heartfelt story that explores themes of love, discovery, and faith. The book is praised for its beautiful moments and the magic it brings to the reader. The narration by Abby Craden is highly appreciated, adding intensity to the already sad and steamy storyline. While some readers found the characters unlikable and the relationships archaic, overall, the book is considered excellent and worth reading for its pure joy of love and a great storyline.

This messed me up so much!! Can’t believe Gerri Hill made me cry like this but she got me. Beautiful story, probably the most touching I have ever read from her. But man, it hurt.

Extremely moving novel by one of my favorite writers. Admittedly it is profoundly sad, but has so many beautiful moments of discovery that I found it inspiring. The two main characters are women trapped in conventional lives in which they are taken for granted, then they stumble upon each other in tranquil park. If you have ever felt magic or somehow believe in magic, this book shimmers with it.

As an audiobook, this was excellent. As a story, I liked it but didn't love it. It's a complicated but simple story. It's romantic and sad. My main problem with the story is the infidelity. I didn't like Craig or Arlene. I'm not fond of that type of unlikable character. The relationships between Arlene and Craig and Jill just seemed archaic. I'm not going to say those types of relationships don't happen, but I found them at least somewhat unbelievable. And I really want to know what's next. The story ends, but there's so much left untold.

Romantic, moving and sad. It's very rare a book can put tears in my eyes, but when momma duck arrived at the cottage, I choked up.

The reading by Abby Craden of course was great and I find her voice so sexy.

I love your work Gerri Hill. You are the Tupac of lesbian fiction. Not because you are “gangsta” but because you know you won’t be here forever. The amount of work you put out tells me you aren’t delusional. Tupac died at 25 and we are STILL waiting for more singles to drop. Your work ethic is amazing. And your work is amazing too. Basically I da shit.

Best Gerri Hill story yet and made perfect with Abby Cradon's narration. Would love to hear a sequel.

I thought it was pretty good I just felt like the main character was every bit as unlikeable as her husband was and she held on way to much to a family she had already worked her way out near the end and the ending overall just reminded me of so many queer stories in the way that it couldn’t have ended happily. But overall it was a quick read that I don’t regret at all and I will definitely be reading more from this author.

How can something be so sad and steamy? My favorite book by Hill and also so profound. Not an HEA (no spoiler here, you’ll figure this out in the first chapter), but worth the listen for the pure joy of love and a great storyline.
