About this audiobook

What if mythology isn't myth? The ancient Greeks told fabulously detailed stories involving unbelievable creatures-monsters dominating all tales from that time. Were they just highly imaginative, or was their inspiration from somewhere else?

Doctor Talbot Harrison, a professor in archaeology, receives a phone call one day which will destroy everything he perceives as reality. His brother has been mysteriously killed and within moments the United States military appear at his door, literally dragging him from his home. Thrown into a helicopter under intense armed guard, it doesn't take long until they are attacked by something which cannot possibly exist, something drawn to destroy the one man who can stop the beasts from a land beyond Hades . . .

Got about four chapters in and had to quit. The idea is neat, but the characters seem one-dimensional and hackneyed. Might get better, but I'd rather re-read Dan Simmons' "Hyperion" than this. The Percy Jackson series is better than this, which would go straight to DVD if it were a movie.

This book is nonstop, relentless action. We have a large base of mythology, mixed with conspiracy, action, and suspense. Just when you think a break is coming where you can breathe, it jumps right back into high gear. The story is plot-driven, with the little character development coming in pieces throughout. Normally, this is a problem for me since I prefer character-driven fiction. But the plot here held me captivated. Romyn is able to paint a vivid portrait of the mythical creatures and the worlds they inhabit. Occasionally a bit of dialogue would have me laughing amidst the chaos, and Wes was by far my favorite character. This is one of those rare, truly unique books. I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
