About this audiobook

Disturbing. Original. Terrifying. The 'master of horror' is back with the chilling tale of what lurks in the walls of an abandoned hospital.

In this abandoned hospital, pain lives on... and it wants revenge.

St Philomena's military hospital has been abandoned for over three years. Now Lilian Chesterfield, who works for one of the most successful building companies in England, is in charge of developing it into a luxury housing complex.

But as soon as she and her colleagues start work in the Jacobean-style mansion, their dream turns into a nightmare. They hear screaming from wards full of empty beds. They hear doors slamming and find cutlery scattered over the kitchen floor. Then they see faces peering at them from the mullioned windows.

Lilian is pragmatic – she doesn't believe in the supernatural. But just when she's put her mind at rest by scouring the mansion from top to bottom and finding nothing, a former patient of St Philomena's arrives with a warning. The hospital is haunted. And it is haunted by something a thousand times more terrifying than ghosts...

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a fun and uniquely gory horror novel. The story revolves around the renovation of an old war veterans hospital that is haunted by demons, Djinns, ghosts, and evil entities. The visual depictions are vivid and the suspense keeps readers intrigued. The narrator in the audiobook does an incredible job, bringing the story to life. However, some readers found the writing choices and accents in the audiobook to be laughably bad. Overall, it is an enjoyable read with a few minor flaws.

Wonderfully written and narrated. Suspense driven, in this uniquely premised story... I couldn't help finding it very intriguing. There was a little predictability but it didn't hurt the story at all. I found the visual depictions extremely vivid. Be prepared they are gruesome. All in all, wonderfully done. The narrator really did an incredible job. Really brought the story to life and her voice changes were amazing. 5 stars just for her.

Not as good as his vintage classics....but it was still a fun and very uniquely gory horror novel about a renovation of an old war veterans hospital that is haunted. Yes, this had never been done in quite this way. As only Masterton can do, he writes about demons, Djinns, ghosts, and just plain and old evil entities that torment a woman who has come to update the hospital. But are all these ghosts going to allow it? You should really read this book; and if you have never read Graham Masterton....why not? Enjoyed it immensely until the very last page! What the hell and why?

We are introduced to the main character, Lilian, by her talking about gaining four pounds in a week and lamenting that she had eaten a SANDWICH for supper. Apparently, that’s too much bread. She goes on to say how she regretted not wearing Spanx that day. To work. At a construction site.

I would like to invite Graham Masterton to cram his body into a pair of Spanx and reevaluate his writing choices.

It was really funny to me that Masterton goes on to describe the company that Lilian works for as being misogynistic and behind the times. The call is coming from inside the house, Graham.

Story is great. Please read this over the audiobook though. The accents are laughably bad. Like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins bad. Makes the story hard to get through or take serious.
