Oh my goodness. This was unsettling. The twists were unpredictable. This was a good thriller.

Worth a listen but not a fan of the ending

The Echo Man by Sam Holland was more graphic than I expected. It doesn't shy away from disturbing topics like rape, torture, and murder. Be warned before diving into this book.

I listened to the audiobook on Everand.com. Generally, I prefer the baritone voices of male narrators, but Sarah Lambie was excellent. It's also worth noting that there are two narrators. The male voice, excellently portrayed by Leighton Pugh, gives insight into the serial killer's thoughts, adding a dramatic dimension to the story. The book is well-paced, and I was surprised by how involved I got in trying to figure out who the serial killer was. It's a great whodunnit that keeps you guessing.

However, the book is perhaps a tad longer than it needs to be. The twist at the end seemed to take it a bit too far, slightly tarnishing the quality. I would rate it 3.5 stars with the added twist to the end, but ignoring that, I am happy to round it up to 4 stars.

All in all, The Echo Man is not a bad book, and I will probably read the second book in the series to see where the author takes the story.

I thought I knew what to expect with this book after I read some of the reviews, but, believe me, they did not prepare me for this bloodbath of a book. After I had read about 1/4 of it, I would have put it away, but it was given to me, so I felt compelled to finish. At that point I would have probably given it 3 stars because it had captured my interest, and I hadn't yet read the 100's of pages of blood, gore and depravity. As I continued the star rating kept going down and when I finally finished it, it was actually barely 1/2 star, but since there is no way to enter that rating,, I left it at one. For those of you who like your thrillers graphic and full of blood and killing, this is the book for you. To me it felt like the author threw everything but the kitchen sink into this mess. I really don't know if he missed any possible depravities, but to me it felt like he didn't. After reading the afterward, I realize that this is a first novel for Mr. Holland, and he followed the advice of his publisher to not stop at anything. The book is about 450 pages long, and with all the repetitiveness, and with the cliffhanger of the ending, I think it could have ended at 150 pages. I think I should have stopped at that point anyway.

The Echo Man by Sam Holland is a British police procedural. Detectives Cara Elliott and Noah Deakin are stymied by the investigations of several vicious murders. What makes these murders puzzling is the fact that the crimes are all committed what different modi operandi. Who could be doing this? Who will be next? How are the victims selected? What is the reason for all this viciousness? The detectives soon discover that the murders are copycat killings: the perpetrator is mimicking the killings of famous serial killers, which explained why each murder was different. I found The Echo Man to be tense and suspenseful and the characters flawed and varied. What kept me from rating this novel with five stars was the brutal, excessively violent plot and the sometimes unrealistic storyline. What started out as a mystery soon devolved into the horror genre. This is Sam Holland’s debut novel and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. Thank you to Crooked Lane Books, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A Perfect and Disturbing Psycho Thriller..................A wonderful thriller by Sam Holland in The Echo Man which is going to shatter you with every page. Right from the beginning the plot is going to capture your attention. Although, the book has some disturbing and gory details, but they are going to add more interest in the plot. And when the climax comes, the author drops it off as a nuclear bomb. You are definitely going to think about the book for a long time.I am, definitely going to give the book 5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.
