This program is read by the author.
Fans of David Sedaris, Jenny Lawson, and Tina Fey… meet your new friend Gary Janetti.
Gary Janetti, the writer and producer for some of the most popular television comedies of all time, and creator of one of the most wickedly funny Instagram accounts there is, now turns his skills into a hilarious, and poignant audiobook chronicling the pains and indignities of everyday life.
Gary spends his twenties in New York, dreaming of starring on soap operas while in reality working at a hotel where he lusts after an unattainable colleague and battles a bellman who despises it when people actually use a bell to call him. He chronicles the torture of finding a job before the internet when you had to talk on the phone all the time, and fantasizes, as we all do, about who to tell off when he finally wins an Oscar. As Gary himself says, “These are essays from my childhood and young adulthood about things that still annoy me.”
Original, brazen, and laugh out loud funny, Do You Mind if I Cancel? is something not to be missed.
Praise for Do You Mind If I Cancel?:
"Gary Janetti's book is so rolling-on-the-floor funny, so brilliantly observant, and so full of heart.” — Kevin Kwan
"The writing of Gary Janetti, whether televised or tweeted, is famously incisive and sharp-tongued. What a revelation it was, therefore, to discover in these revealing personal essays an artist of great tenderness and vulnerability. And he's still funny as hell." — Armistead Maupin
“It’s no surprise that Gary Janetti's book is laugh-out-loud funny. It is just as cutting, wild, and droll as I hoped.” - Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Jones and the Six

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. Some appreciate the author's ability to transport them to his past and the relatable stories he shares. Others find the book depressing, lacking a recurring theme, and not providing enough information about the author. The humor in the book is hit or miss, and some readers find the author's narration lacking. However, there are positive reviews praising the book's humor, wit, and realistic depiction of the author's life. Overall, the book is worth a listen or read, but it may not be for everyone.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A very short, campy, fun, read, about what essentially is a gay coming of age story. The book mostly falls into the comic, quasi-memoir style of David Sedaris. I was almost going to give up on the story about a third of the way in, but his hilarious descriptions of finding suitable work was just enough to keep me going. And then before I knew it, the book was done, like swallowing a nice piece of New York style cheesecake or some slippery caramel drenched flan going down easy. Although I must say the author did seem to glance too quickly over the whole ‘80s AIDS crisis at the end; I would’ve advised Janetti to rework that part; it’s too big of an era to cover in such a passé way.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Hilarious, witty, and a quick audiobook too. Loved every bit of it!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Vivacious, funny and realistic.
Picturesque depiction of his life.
Worth listening to at least on Scribd! - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5it was more depressing than humorous overall. The stories had no recurring theme to them and I didn’t learn anything about Gary.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was OKAY, not great or anything... I’m into historical fiction lately so learning about NYC in the 70s, 80s, 90s was a fun ride! I did not particularly enjoyed the constant jumping through the years and I was looking forward how his life went from THAT, to what his career is now (and how he got Brad because I’m a sucker for “they get together at end” plot lines) but that never happened and it ended oh so abruptly.... right after the subtle “all of these men were dead” (The Normal Heart all over again, sniff).... 2.5 because I felt cheated.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The book is nice and definitely funny if a little short for the asking price of the print edition. Unfortunately the monotone in which Gary (the author) delivers most of the audio book is insufferable and makes me wonder whether the fact that he didn't make it as an actor has to do with the fact that he can't stay in character, and this is truly a shame since he's a really talented writer. The few glimpses of emotion in his voice that glitter throughout the audio book only add frustration to the listening experience since it makes you realize how great it could have been to listen but fortunately this only last less than 4 hours. I still might buy a hardback if I ever find it at a decent price.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I don’t think I would’ve ever picked up this book to read or listen had it not been for a review I had read about it’s ability to transport one to reminisce and wow, I’m so glad I got to listen to the author narrate his book. The way he looks back at his past, his choices, his life... it’s all just so well written and said and I definitely will be recommending it for all. I plan on getting a hard copy to reread in the future and underline my favorite parts :)
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5What book has everyone else had? This is absolute self obsessed drivel
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I tried, honest I did, but that nasal whine drove me bats!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I loved Gary’s snarky take on working at the Paramount. And everything else!
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5To quote the author, "the best I was usually able to muster was extreme eye-rolling."
I found the opinions/behaviors to be shallow and uninspiring. Just shy of being a cliche. I changed over to the Audiobook in case I was missing something. NOPE. The author's monotone narration didn't help elevate the content nor emphasize what was supposed to be funny.
If this wasn't our book club read, I personally would have stopped after the first essay. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I knew nothing about Gary before I bump into this book. I started hearing the audio book as something to keep entertained while I cooked and oh my, I listen to more than half of it during the first seating. Laughing, paying close attention and relating to everything he had to say. So good. It was a great surprise for me.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The author isn’t the best reader. The jokes don’t hit right. But it’s an okay book.
