About this audiobook

"Whether this is the listener's first or fiftieth In Death story, they're guaranteed an enjoyable listening experience."-AudioFile on Abandoned in Death

Homicide detective Eve Dallas must untangle a twisted family history while a hostage’s life hangs in the balance—in the new In Death novel by New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.

The woman’s body was found in the early morning, on a bench in a New York City playground. She was clean, her hair neatly arranged, her makeup carefully applied. But other things were very wrong—like the tattoo and piercings, clearly new. The clothes, decades out of date. The fatal wound hidden beneath a ribbon around her neck. And the note: Bad Mommy, written in crayon as if by a child.

Eve Dallas turns to the department’s top profiler, who confirms what seems obvious to Eve: They’re dealing with a killer whose childhood involved some sort of trauma—a situation Eve is all too familiar with herself. Yet the clues suggest a perpetrator who’d be roughly sixty years old, and there are no records of old crimes with a similar MO. What was the trigger that apparently reopened such an old wound and sent someone over the edge?

When Eve discovers that other young women—who physically resemble the first victim—have vanished, the clock starts ticking louder. But to solve this case she will need to find her way into a hidden place of dim light and concrete, into the distant past, and into the cold depths of a shattered mind.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be an excellent addition to the JD Robb series. The near-future mysteries centered on the character of Eve Dallas continue to impress readers, with just enough personal interaction between the known characters. While the pacing may not be perfect, the psychological exploration of the story's characters is well done. The book is not overly violent and keeps readers hooked, making it a superb addition to the series.

Hard to believe that Nora Roberts (writing as J.D. Robb for the In Death series) can keep writing such excellent near-future mysteries centred on the character of Eve Dallas, after so many books in the series. I have my favourites and recognize some are better than others - depending upon your preferences but am really impressed with this one "Abandoned in Death." Just enough personal interaction between the known characters - who are connected to Eve and show up in every book, to satisfy those of us who have been following the series and are looking for further news of them, but not so much that they overshadow the story. It did lag in places - not perfect pacing (in my opinion), but the psychological exploration of the story's characters was well done and compensated for this. Not much violence in this one. I didn't figure out who the killer was before Eve did. While better to read the series, this could be read as stand-alone as well.

How Roberts/Robb can keep me just as hooked on book 50+ of this series as she did on book #1 is a matter for those smarter than I am. Superb addition to the line.
