About this audiobook

Andy Davidson's epic horror novel about the spectacular decline of the Redfern family, haunted by an ancient evil.

Nellie Gardner is looking for a way out of an abusive marriage when she learns that her long-lost grandfather, August Redfern, has willed her his turpentine estate. She throws everything she can think of in a bag and flees to Georgia with her eleven-year-old son, Max, in tow.

It turns out that the "estate" is a decrepit farmhouse on a thousand acres of old pine forest, but Nellie is thrilled about the chance for a fresh start for her and Max, and a chance for the happy home she never had. So it takes her a while to notice the strange scratching in the walls, the faint whispering at night, how the forest is eerily quiet. But Max sees what his mother can't: They're no safer here than they had been in South Carolina. In fact, things might even be worse. There's something wrong with Redfern Hill. Something lurks beneath the soil, ancient and hungry, with the power to corrupt hearts and destroy souls. It is the true legacy of Redfern Hill: a kingdom of grief and death, to which Nellie’s own blood has granted her the key.

From the author of The Boatman's Daughter, The Hollow Kind is a jaw-dropping novel about legacy and the horrors that hide in the dark corners of family history. Andy Davidson's gorgeous, Gothic fable tracing the spectacular fall of the Redfern family will haunt you long after you turn the final page.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a twisty and poetic horror that kept them guessing. However, some readers found the constant bouncing around in time to be confusing and felt that the book was too long-winded. The audiobook also caused confusion for some listeners due to the lack of indication when the point of view was switching. Despite these issues, readers loved the pacing towards the end and had a strong appreciation for the character Max.

It was a pretty good story, had several creepy moments and I was interested in where the story was going. I'd recommend it but I wouldn't say it was amazing.

The book itself was really good, but the audiobook was a bit confusing at times. Without a pause to switch between points of view, the narrator left me very confused about who was speaking/thinking at times and caused me to have to restart a chapter or portion of the book quite often. It would have really helped to have some kind of pause or indication that the point of view was switching to help keep listeners on track.

The pacing felt a bit odd at times in the beginning but towards the end it picked up REALLY well!

    Loved Max so much.

Twisty, poetic horror that kept me guessing the entire way through.

Not sure why this is considered a Gothic horror, but either way, it wasn't great. The constant bouncing around in time made it hard to follow the thread of all the character plots. It might have made a really good short story, but for me, it was too long winded for what it delivered.
