About this audiobook

One of CrimeReads’s Most Anticipated Crime Books of 2021
Longlisted for the Theakston Old Peculier 2021 Crime Novel of the Year

The “queen of the sucker-punch twist” (Ruth Ware, #1 New York Times bestselling author) and author of Our House weaves an unputdownable page-turner about a commuter who becomes a suspect in his friend’s mysterious disappearance.

It all happens so quickly. One day you’re living the dream, commuting to work by ferry with your charismatic neighbor Kit in the seat beside you. The next, Kit hasn’t turned up for the boat and his wife, Melia, has reported him missing.

When you get off at your stop, the police are waiting. Another passenger saw you and Kit arguing on the boat home the night before and the police say that you had a reason to want him dead. You protest. You and Kit are friends—ask Melia, she’ll vouch for you. And who exactly is this other passenger pointing the finger? What do they know about your lives?

No, whatever danger followed you home last night, you are innocent, totally innocent.

Aren’t you?

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a multi-faceted and deep read with intertwining plots. The book explores themes of ageism, social status, and the income gap, which may make some readers anxious. The characters are well-developed, with Jamie being a love/dislike character who is honest about his lower responsibility job. The story keeps readers hooked and offers unexpected twists. This story was very different, although it reminded me just a tiny bit of B. A. Paris, Bring Me Back. It reminded me of that story because the main character is a man. Usually these suspense books are some hapless woman. Here we have Jamie who is a love/dislike character. What I liked about Jamie was he was very honest about liking his lower responsibility job, many people would not admit this. I felt his girlfriend pressured him too much about the job. The thing I disliked about Jamie was that he was a lying, cheating pr**ck. I have no sympathy for cheaters yet, you still kind of like this guy. Melia was a total b**ch and I love what he says to her at the end. This was a good read, kept me hooked and I had not idea how this book would end.

The narrator makes annoying sounds in between.
It's like he is eating or playing with his teeth.

    Story-give it a try until 3/4.

    No hero.

Maybe I was in the wrong state, but this book made me very anxious, and all the characters just cared about money.

This book is all about ageism, social status and the income gap that makes housing so difficult for so many people. It’s the entire premise of the book.

I listened to the book because I recognized her name. After I started listening, I looked up what I had read by this author. It was The Heights. That one ended with the same dull thud as this one.

Excellent! Great plot and characters that don't miss a beat. Some of the narration effects were odd, like phone conversations and odd breathing but wasn't enough to distract from the outstanding story.
