About this audiobook
As a mother and a famous author, Ward DeFleur has it all. She lives in a beautiful estate in picture-perfect Connecticut, along with her teenage daughter, Stevie, where nothing can go wrong. Until, one night, when Stevie is brutally murdered and Ward’s entire world is shattered. Consumed by panic and grief, Ward vows never to put pen to paper again.
Enter Bree Bennett.
Bree is a recently-divorced, former-journalist-cum-housewife, desperate to fill her days with something other than Pilates classes and grocery shopping. So she decides to start writing for the town newspaper. What begins as Bree’s effort to tell Ward’s tragic narrative turns into a fixation with finding her favorite author. Unfortunately, Ward doesn’t want to be found. Even worse, Stevie’s killer is still on the loose…
This harrowing tale of one woman’s infatuation and another woman’s fear is full of explosive surprises, perfect for fans of The Night Olivia Fell and Then She Was Gone.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a mix of good and bad. Some reviewers enjoyed the suspense and surprising ending, while others were aggravated by it and felt that it went off track. The writing style and plot were praised, but some reviewers wanted more or less from the book. The characters were seen as overly dramatic by some. Overall, the book was considered a fair summer read that kept attention while on vacation. However, there were mixed feelings about the ending, with some finding it terrible and others finding it unreal. Despite the negative reviews, the book was still enjoyed by many.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Let me just start by saying this: that ending - WTF?!?! I am so aggravated by it. It went way out into left field. I hate when I’m left hanging like that. Opened up so many questions!
The book was good overall. It gave me just enough suspense to keep hanging on. And because I had to know what all of it was leading up to. There are parts that seem to be thrown in for the sake of hitting a certain page count. It wasn’t knockout ‘wow’ but it wasn’t a slow burn and I am so thankful for that. I loved the writing style. The plot was great. I just wanted a little more. Or a little less. I’m not sure which at this point.
The characters just kind of confused me. Everything they did seemed over the top. I guess overly dramatic is the best word to describe it.
Thanks to NetGalley, author Emily Liebert and Gallery Books for this free copy! All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by others. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I wanted to like this book. I had forgotten I even started it and started it over again and its not that it poorly written, it’s just not that great. The teasers are all about the shocking ending. I just thought it was a terrible ending to an ok book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Fair summer read. It kept my attention while on vacation
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Everyone was right- the book was good and then the author ruined all of it in the last 60 seconds.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It kept me on my toes. I enjoyed the two story lines and watching them link together in the end. Surprising ending!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Ehhh. Entertaining but the main character was definitely not an investigative reporter. Though she thought she was...
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow!! This book was amazing. The end was unreal. I loved the 2 narrators made it easier to follow.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5RUINED all on the Authors own. This could have been an excellent ? story and then she went in threw in the last chapters of complete crop that didn't feel at all like the rest of the book. And then the ending !! Just WHY ????
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A bit of a -SPOILER ALERT- I really liked the book until the last 60 seconds. I don’t understand the major plot twist. I’m a big fan of happy endings and this would have had a great ending if the author would have just left off that last bit. Now I need a second book because I have so many unanswered questions.
