This book is about the southern belle, by the name Kendall Moore, who is the oldest of two sisters, raised on a plantation. Without any sons, her father taught her how to run the plantation, but failed to write a will or express his wishes to his wife. After his sudden death, his wife remarried, handing the plantations running to her new husband, who quickly brought it to financial ruin, and blackmailed Kendall into marrying a rich Yankee, threatening to hand her younger sister over to a friend, if she didn't. Mr. Moore is mentally unstable and impotent and takes out all his hostilities on his beautiful young wife, until at the beginning of the War Between the States, she tries to flee Charleston, SC, offering herself to Brent McClain, a Confederate captain of his ship Jenni-Lyn.
John Moore, now a Union officer, catches up with her (Kendall Moore) and nearly kills McClain, but in the ensuing years that manage to reunite and fall in love. But the war, duty, and a spurned husband make those years dangerous. Beautifully written, but with a healthy history of the past and that of the civil war between the Northern army and the southern army. The story also focuses on the certain individuals that took part in fighting during the war; the individual parts played in the war. The nature of suffering caused by the different parties that were involved toward other parties during the war. From these two couples' point of view, they loved their land and way of life, although they did not see that it is morally wrong to buy and sell another human being! But somehow the war and the experience of the war did cause them to have a change of mind. But many were still very bitter in their hate and willingness to hold on to the old and bad ways leading to the result of the civil war. Together, with the many losses and livelihoods of the South!
This is one of the best works of Heather Graham, and she did present the Southern view and some of their pain. Again, the story did show and bring into view the evil of some human hearts and souls. I will say that the South did still fail to understand that Salary is wrong and humanly bad.
