About this audiobook

A homicide detective in the dark. A serial killer on the loose. Both have their obsessions in a nerve-twisting novel of suspense by New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton.

Austin homicide detective Jordan Poe is hunting a serial killer she fears is the same man who assaulted her sister, Avery, two years ago. The details line up: the victims are the same age, same type, dead by the same grim MO. Luckily Avery survived. But the terrible memories linger, making Jordan more determined than ever to stop this monster in his tracks.

Texas Ranger Carter Spencer isn’t one to poach on a detective’s territory. Yet no matter how resentful a capable lone wolf like Jordan is, when she is attacked at a third crime scene and suffers a trauma that leaves her with limited vision, it’s up to Carter to help Jordan navigate a world she no longer recognizes. He needs her instinct, her experience, and her fearless resolve to crack this case. A case that’s about to get even darker.

A stranger is watching. He’s closing in on his ultimate prey. And no one but the killer can see what’s coming.

In this fast-paced thriller, Jordan Poe, a homicide detective who suffers a blow to the head, deals with low-vision issues while hunting a maniac killing young girls. This demented killer subjects his victims to slow and steady suffocation while he rapes them—something the author refers to as sexual heroin. If you are squeamish about rape, you should probably skip this book. I found it suspenseful and well-written. I also loved the romantic tension between Jordan and Spencer—a Texas Ranger—who gets assigned to the case. I will look forward to reading more from Mary Burton.

Although this thriller is a little more predictable than I would have liked, I did really enjoy it and am glad to have stumbled upon the author's work. The characters are engaging and worth spending time with, and the story overall is really well told. I also enjoyed the twists even if the killer was made clear a bit early for my taste, and seeing how it all tied together was an enjoyable escape. It is worth noting that the back cover's description of the book gives away some major plot points that don't occur until nearly halfway through the book--having read the back, and thought I was reading about the early plot or the inciting incident, I was dismayed to find that the events outlined there occur so late. That description on the back takes away a lot of the tension that the writer worked so hard for, and I have to say that it made the middle of the book lag pretty severely, throwing off the pacing as well as the suspense. For readers of Burton's work, I'd say you want to avoid reading the back entirely. I'm quite sure I would have enjoyed this read a lot more if I'd known to avoid it.

Don’t Look Now by Mary BurtonDark, gritty, intense, and compelling – this book had my interest from page one and held it till the very end. What I liked: * Jordan Poe: homicide detective, big sister, took on responsibility for her sister when their mother died, dealt with family addiction issues, capable, intelligent, respected, professional, workaholic, interesting.* Carters Spencer: Texas Ranger, experienced serial killer sleuth, bright, dedicated, widow, capable, professional, intelligent, intriguing, good friend.* Avery: Jordan’s sister, addiction issues, working to stay sober, loves her sister, survivor.* The plot and writing* The police procedural aspects* That there were believable red herrings* That the serial killer was not revealed too soon (although I do read the end of books before I get to the end as I need to know what happens)* The camaraderie of the team working the case* Wondering if this is a standalone story or perhaps the introduction to a series * Hoping that I will get to see what happens later in the lives of the main characters* That everything was tied up at the end – no real loose endsWhat I didn’t like: * Knowing that there are people in the world as bad as the ones in this story* Not finding out the full backstory of the serial killer – although – nothing would validate or explain the crimes committedDid I enjoy this book? YesWould I read more by this author? YesThank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4-5 Stars

An intense, chilling opening sets the tone for "Don't Look Now", a thrilling police procedural from acclaimed suspense author Mary Burton. When Austin, TX Homicide Detective Jordan Poe is called to a grisly murder scene, painful memories are brought back from a similar crime that had happened two years ago--one that involved her own sister, Avery. Both young women were petite blondes with drug habits. Jordan had managed to find Avery and save her with just seconds to spare. After their mother's death, Jordan had always worried about her younger sister's welfare, and Avery's drug use had long been a bone of contention between them. After her near-death experience, Avery had made an attempt to stay clean. When another victim with a similar crime scene MO is discovered, local law enforcement brings in Texas Ranger Carter Spencer to assist in the investigation. There is tension at first between Jordan and Carter--she didn't like handing over the case to someone else. However, when Jordan is attacked at a third crime scene, she suffers an injury which causes her vision to be impaired. She must now rely on Carter to help her, and he needs her knowledge, intuition, and skill to help him catch a serial killer. A growing mutual respect blooms into friendship, and then into something more. This case is deeper, darker, and more personal than they first realized. The evil is far closer and stronger than they could have imagined. Can they survive the truth and bring this reign of terror to an end? With Jordan's future in law enforcement in question, can love find a way to bring new hope and make wishes for happiness together come true? Author Mary Burton's detailed, descriptive writing will give you goosebumps as you keep reading until the last page is turned.Book Copy Gratis Author
