The Thirty-Nine Steps is an adventure novel by the Scottish author John Buchan. It first appeared as a serial in Blackwood's Magazine in August and September 1915 before being published in book form in October that year by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh. It is the first of five novels featuring Richard Hannay, an all-action hero with a stiff upper lip and a miraculous knack for getting himself out of sticky situations.

John Buchan

John Buchan was a Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet and novelist, born in Perth in 1875. He published nearly 30 novels and seven collections of short stories. After spells as a war correspondent, Lloyd George’s Director of Information and Conservative MP, Buchan moved to Canada in 1935. He served as Governor General there until his death in 1940.

Very much an oldstyle noir mystery... not one female character in sight... blatant bigotry... in the unapologetic era of British world rule... and yet, a fun diversion as an historical artifact. The plot is as twisted as they get. Well- produced with a delightful reader. (watch out for the several other versions with less stellar production quality!) This is the best version i found.
