About this audiobook

A behind-the-scenes edition of 2,000 Miles Together, offering over four hours of bonus content featuring interviews and insights by the Crawford family. Not available in other formats.

As his six children slept on the dirty floor of a women’s restroom while a blizzard howled outside, Ben Crawford had one thought: Have I gone too far?

The next morning, Child Protective Services, along with an armed sheriff, arrived to ask the same question.

2,000 Miles Together is the story of the largest family ever to complete a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, defying skeptics and finding friends in the unlikeliest of places. On the trail, Ben Crawford battled not only the many dangers and obstacles presented by the wilderness—snowstorms, record-breaking heat, Lyme disease, overflowing rivers, toothaches, rattlesnakes, forest fires, and spending the night with a cult—but also his own self-doubt. In an effort to bring his family closer together, was he jeopardizing his future relationship with his kids? When the hike was done, would any of them speak to him again?

The Crawford family’s self-discovery over five months, thousands of miles, and countless gummy bears proves that there’s more than one way to experience life to the fullest. You don’t have to accept the story you’ve been shown. By leaving home, you’ll find more than just adventure--you’ll find a new perspective on the relationships we often take for granted, and open yourself up to a level of connection you never thought possible.

What an incredible journey for this family. Whether you agree or disagree with the decisions this family made. They were bold and courageous decisions that required a lot of faith in those around them.

I came across this book in a random Goodreads list one day, while searching for another book, and decided it looked like a good one to get in at some stage. And what an interesting story it turned out to be! I’d heard about the Appalachian Trail before reading this book; an acquaintance hiked part of it quite a few years back, I believe. But I’ve always wondered what it would be like to take on such a big undertaking, and to see this attempted by an entire family is something else again! I was sucked into the Crawford’s story from the get-go and enjoyed following along on this journey with them. There were things I didn’t appreciate so much; I don’t agree with some of their beliefs and didn’t appreciate the language in the book. For those two reasons, I almost put the book down without finishing it several times, but each time I came back to it because I really wanted to know how it all ended up for them.In the end, this was a challenging, inspiring read. It made me want to get out and do some hiking of my own, even though I’m one of the laziest, least-active people I know! I wouldn’t recommend this book to a teenage or younger audience, because some of the content is more on an adult level. I’m not sad I read it, overall, but due to parts of the content, I don’t feel like I can recommend it as highly as other books.
