- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5The Alden children are going on a trip to visit a friend of their grandfather’s, Captain Lambert. Once there, the kids start noticing strange things happening around Cap’s cabin – creepy whistling in the night, a wandering light floating around in the shadows, and bizarre holes dug up all over the yard. Will they help Cap Lambert figure out what’s causing all these odd occurrences? Is the cabin really haunted? Gertrude Chandler Warner started writing the Boxcar Children books in the 1930’s as a way to supply developing readers with easy-to-read stories that were also interesting – creating a series that eventually became a beloved favorite among generations. It is unfortunate, however, that the graphic novel franchise of the series is such a poor substitute for the books. The dialogue and storyline are choppy and incomplete, making for a stuttering plot that jumps around without logic. The juxtaposition between illustration cells is poorly-developed and creators try to make up for it by having characters “explain” the action that could have been made obvious if more attention had been paid. The illustrations, themselves, are simple and uninspired with drab color themes and confusing perspective. All in all, the comic is a miss and a disappointing addition to a previously adored series. For ages 6-8.
