About this audiobook
Take a Hike! is the story of one man's journey on the 2167 mile long Appalachian Trail.
Tim Hewitt, whose trail name was Paddler, talks about trip planning and preparation and shares with you his daily journal for his six month adventure. He is joined on the trip by his thirteen year old son David for five weeks in the summer. David's journal and perspective are also included.
This book is not intended to be an all-inclusive planning guide for your Appalachian Trail thru-hike, but it does contain information that the author believes will help you to plan and succeed in your own long distance hiking adventure.
Bonus chapters bring you a sample of Tim's creative writing talent as well, as he introduces you to the mythology of the Cherokee Ugalu, and the Penobscot Pamola, two spirit-beasts that haunt the Appalachian Mountains. These short stories are also available in the stand-alone book; Appalachian Trail Myths: The Ugalu & Pamola.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Boring
The guy over pronounced everything. Very annoying. I could not finish the audio book. Like is not good.. stupid.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This likely was a good read when first published but the technical material is so dated as to be of little use. I enjoyed the narrative sections but found little that could be useful for planning uses. I’m glad I listened to it but I’m unlikely to listen again. If I could find a cheap paperback or a library copy, I might skim sections again.
Panther - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I enjoyed this book thoroughly and got a real sense of adventure and struggle that trail could bring hiking the AT!!! I love that his son journaled as well!!!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The overall story on the trail is great. Experiencing the AT through Paddler’s eyes is excellent and the tale is well-written. The first several chapters on gear etc are totally unnecessary and boring - skip them.
My least favorite part is the narrator. He seems like a beginner with enthusiasm and that is it. His inflections are often inaccurate and he mispronounces many words that are simple hiker lingo - like “hostel” being pronounced “haw-stell”. Would be great for someone to redo the audio!
