About this audiobook

Set in the industrialising England of the Napoleonic wars – a period of bad harvests, Luddite riots and economic unrest – Shirley is the story of two contrasting heroines and the men they love. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory, whose life represents the plight of single women in the 19th century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention.

Parts of this I really enjoyed and parts I found quite frustrating. Shirley is quite annoying at times It was, unfortunately, just okay

A lovely story with a cast of colourful characters and plenty twists and turns, wonderfully narrated from start to finish. At times Charlotte Brontë does lose herself a bit too much in stretching out the romantic tension and the hights of the emotions, but I guess that's to be expected of novels of that era.

An engaging plot, endearing character of Caroline and that of amazing Shirley and beautifully narrated by Anna Bentinck. Great experience.
