René Descartes
René Descartes wird 1596 in der Touraine als Sohn eines Parlamentsrates geboren. Der Achtzehnjährige tritt 1604 ins jesuitische Collège Royal ein und erhält dort eine umfassende Ausbildung in Latein, Geschichte, Rhetorik, Philosophie, Physik und Mathematik. Von 1616 an reist Descartes im Dienste unterschiedlicher Feldherren quer durch Europa und nimmt an den ersten Feldzügen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges teil. Dabei ist er jedoch ständig auch mit naturwissenschaftlichen wie auch philosophischen Fragestellungen beschäftigt und nutzt die Gelegenheit, sich europaweit mit führenden Gelehrten auszutauschen. Die Emigration in die Niederlande 1628 ist auf die Auseinandersetzung mit Theologen Frankreichs zurückzuführen. Dort erscheint auch 1637 anonym die Discour de la méthode. Die Meditationes de prima philosophia (1641) entwickeln dann die im Discour nur angedeutete grundlegende Wissenschaft der Metaphysik, während die Principia Philosophiae die Zäsur setzen, die Descartes’ Rang als Begründer der Philosophie der Neuzeit geltend machen.1649 folgt Descartes einer Einladung seiner Briefpartnerin, der Königin Christina von Schweden, sie in der Philosophie zu unterrichten. Kaum angekommen, erliegt er jedoch dem rauhen Klima und stirbt 1650 an einer Lungenentzündung.
