Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russell wird als Sohn einer alten Adelsfamilie 1872 in Wales geboren. Nach dem Studium der Mathematik und Philosophie in Cambridge beginnt er eine glänzende akademische Karriere, die ihn nach Rußland, China und in die Vereinigten Staaten führt.Russell beschäftigt sich zunächst hauptsächlich mit logisch-mathematischen Arbeiten und veröffentlicht zusammen mit A. N. Whitehead 1910 die Principia mathematica, die als Grundlagenwerk in der Geschichte der modernen mathematischen Logik eingeht. 1918 faßt er die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchungen in der Einführung in die mathematische Philosophie zusammen. Russells Anwendungen der mathematischen Logik auf die Sprache werden Wegbereiter der sprachanalytischen Philosophie. 1914 erscheint Unser Wissen von der Außenwelt, in dem Russell die logisch-analytische Methode auf die Philosophie anwendet. Er untersucht Wesen und Erwerb sicheren Wissens von der Objektiven Außenwelt und erörtert das Verhältnis der Sinnesdaten zu Raum, Zeit und dem Gegenstand der mathematischen Physik. Als vehementer Gegner des 1. Weltkrieges verbüßt Russell 1918 eine sechsmonatige Haftstrafe und verliert seine Anstellung in Cambridge. Seit 1939 lehrt er in den USA, kehrt aber 1945 ans Trinity College zurück. Seine sprachliche und literarische Brillanz bringen ihm 1950 den Nobelpreis für Literatur ein. Das unermüdliche Eintreten für pazifistische Ziele führt 1955 zusammen mit Albert Einstein zum Russell-Einstein-Manifest und zusammen mit Jean-Paul Sartre 1963 zum Vietnam-Tribunal gegen die USA. Bertrand Russell stirbt 1970 im Alter von 98 Jahren in Wales.
