His teaching and research specialty of social problems is reflected in published books and fifty journal articles. When Jack retired from Oklahoma State University, he and his wife Margaret moved into a century-old ranch house in the foothills near Ashland, Oregon. Finding themselves in an unfamiliar environment, they were surprised by some major issues and obstacles common to retirees that blocked transition into successful retirement. These new challenges included the following:
