Province of British India. I graduated from high school in the year 1940: by then U had learned to read, write and speak the following languages: Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, English, and Sanskrit- the language of our ancestors.
My parents couldn't afford to send me to college which was 100 miles away from our place. It was wartime and jobs were available everywhere, and after a couple of jobs I landed in the Defense Accounts Department of the Government of India. I started at the lowest clerical job, qualified as an accountant, after which I confirmed to get a promotion to higher posts from time to time and rose to the highest cadre of the department and retired as a Deputy Controller of Defense Accounts in 1981.
I got married in 1945. In 1947, when India got independence, a part of it was declared as the state of Pakistan, with muslim majority. My town came to be in Pakistan, and in the riots that ensued, we Hindus were driven out of our houses and had to migrate to India. I, with my family, migrated to India at the end of September 1947, having lost everything in Pakistan.
My family immigrated to the U.S. in 1980 and now I have two sons and two daughters, 10 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, all of which are American citizens. I too have been living here since 1992 as a legal alien, and since the year 2006 I have shifted back to India after becoming legally blind.
My only hobby in life was reading. I liked reading from the first English literature, the classical books, and later on non-fiction for general knowledge. All along I have been a keen observer to the political goings on.
