He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1972 and taught Asian Studies and Comparative Literature at Rutgers University for 30 years before his retirement in 2003. His interests also include Asian America studies, the Asia Pacific War 1931-1945 and works to seek justice for the victims of war crimes. Since retirement he has moved to California from New Jersey and now lives and works in Walnut Creek.view less
