Dr. Apple contracted the polio virus as an infant in South Korea. Her family moved to Japan after her fourth grade, where she lived for almost four years but was unable to attend school because of the stigma from her disability.The family later moved to New York City for better education, becoming one of the first Asian families to live in Queens. She came to America with no knowledge of English, and later graduated from NYU with a BS and MS in Biochemistry. She completed medical school in Ohio followed by six years of residency and fellowship training at UCLA.Author of over 70 professional original medical research papers, Sophia has taught hundreds of medical students and numerous physicians-in-training from Radiology, Surgery, and other disciplines. She came to know Jesus as her personal savior at the age of 17 when she was hit by a car while crossing the street, and God changed her life perspective of who she was and the purpose of her life ever since.Her perspective of life and as an author is unique, as an Asian American immigrant and female physician with a physical disability.
