John is a native of the Netherlands, and Esther was born in Wisconsin. John received his U.S. citizenship while serving with the U.S. Army in Korea. He retired from the Yakima County Public Works Department as operation manager. Esther was a fulltime volunteer with several non-profit ministries such as The Union Gospel Mission, Life Choices, the food bank, and others. For ten years, they served the Yakima Valley partners Habitat for Humanity. John as executive director and Esther as a volunteer working with the homeowners. They have four children and seven grandchildren. This book is the result of six years of research and a desire preserve a History Almost Forgotten.view less
