He previously worked as a high school English teacher and coach in Michigan. His research interests include the use of popular cultural texts in the secondary English language arts classroom, nontraditional forms of teacher professional development, and media literacy education. His work has appeared in various book chapters and in refereed journals that include English Education, English Journal, Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, English Teaching: Practice and Critique, and The ALAN Review.
