Introduction
According to the American Institute of Stress, between 75 and 90 percent of all visits to primary-care physicians result from stress-related disorders.¹ The first signs of stress tend to be tension headaches, digestive-tract problems, and skin eruptions. Ironically, these conditions merely add another layer of stress.
If we don’t treat the core causes of stress, the symptoms may become chronic. New, deeper symptoms can arise such as sleeplessness, weight loss or gain, muscle aches (especially back and neck pain), general lethargy or feelings of exhaustion, sluggish thinking, and lack of get-up-and-go or ambition.
If we continue to ignore the core stressors, the chronic symptoms can become outright disease—the kinds that require surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and heavy-duty medications. Each of these treatments, of course, is also a stress-producer!
Stress upon stress upon stress—and all the while, the body doesn’t differentiate what caused the stress in the first place. All the body knows is that it is experiencing stress.
HOW STRESS AFFECTS THE BODY
Stress is mental or physical tension, strain, or pressure. Stress reactions are the ways in which our bodies process and release both the emotions and the negative physical elements we experience in life. Through the years, scientific studies linking the emotions and disease have produced an impressive body of research. Here are some of the findings:
• Certain emotions release hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, into the physical body that, in turn, cause a damaging effect on the body and can trigger the development of a host of diseases.
• Researchers have directly and scientifically linked emotions to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diseases related to the immune system. Studies have also highly correlated emotions with infections, allergies, and autoimmune diseases.
• Specifically, research has linked emotions such as depression to an increased risk of developing cancer and heart disease. Emotions such as anxiety and fear have
