FOREWORD

The best advice I ever received was in 1955. I was twenty-three. Somebody had the good sense to say to me, Luci, if you want to give yourself a gift, learn all you can about the Bible. Start going to a Bible class and don’t stop until you have some knowledge under your belt. You won’t be sorry. Having just graduated from college, I was living with my parents, and together we drove more than twenty miles to attend that class. We went four nights a week for two years. I’ve never been sorry.

Nothing I’ve ever done or learned has meant more to me than those classes. Unless I was on my deathbed, I didn’t miss. I went faithfully, took notes, absorbed everything like a sponge, asked questions relentlessly, and loved every minute! (I probably drove the teacher crazy.)

Today, more than forty years later, this wonderful storehouse of truth is my standard for living, giving, loving, and learning. It is my Rock and Fortress, the pattern for enjoying abundant life on earth, and for all eternity. I know what I believe, and why. I’m open to change on my tastes, personal opinions, even some of my choices. But change my biblical convictions? No way! They’re solid and secure, based on God’s inerrant, enduring, and unchanging Word. There’s nothing like learning God’s truth. As he says, it sets you free.
